We’ve all been there—you find the perfect fabric, the price is right, but then the panic sets in: “What if I measure it wrong?” When it comes to custom window treatments, a few millimeters can be the difference between a sleek, professional finish and an annoying light gap. Whether you are looking for indoor roller blinds or heavy-duty outdoor roller blinds, getting that "perfect fit" starts with a metal tape measure and a little bit of patience.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through exactly how to fit blinds like a pro for every style in your Sydney home.

1. The Golden Rules of Measuring

Before you start, grab a metal tape measure (cloth tapes stretch and are unreliable), a pencil, and paper.

  • Measure in Millimeters (mm): Most Sydney manufacturers, including D&R Blinds, work in mm for precision.
  • Measure Every Window: Even if they look the same size, they rarely are.
  • Width First, Then Drop: Always write your measurements in this order: Width x Drop.

2. Inside Mount vs. Outside Mount Measuring

  • Inside Mount: The blind sits inside the window recess. It provides a clean, integrated look.
  • Outside Mount: The blind sits on the wall or architrave above the window. This is the best choice for blockout blinds to minimize light leakage at the edges, and for outdoor roller blinds to cover the entire opening.
  • 3. Measuring Guide by Blind Style

    Roller, Blockout, and Roman Blinds

For these "fabric panel" styles, precision is key.

    • Inside Mount: Measure the width at the top, middle, and bottom. Use the smallest width. Measure the drop from top to sill in three places; use the longest drop.
    • Outside Mount: Measure exactly where you want the blind to go. We recommend adding the width of the window frame to each side to ensure total coverage.

    Venetian and Vertical Blinds

Because these consist of slats, they are slightly more forgiving but still require accuracy.

  • Venetian Blinds: Follow the inside mount rules. Check that your window handles or winders won't obstruct the slats as they tilt.
  • Vertical Blinds: These are often used for large sliding doors. Measure the width across the top where the track will sit. If the floor is uneven, give us the shortest drop measurement so the slats don't drag.
  • Outdoor Roller Blinds

Outdoor roller blinds are usually much larger. You need to measure between your patio posts. Check if your posts are "plumb" (perfectly vertical). If the gap is wider at the top than the bottom, the blind may struggle to roll straight.

    4. The "Pro" Safety Check

Even with the best guide, measuring can be stressful. If you’re investing in high-quality fit blinds, sometimes it’s best to leave it to the experts.

At D&R Blinds, we offer a Free Measure and Quote across Sydney. Our technicians don't just measure the glass; they check for tile overlaps, architrave depths, and structural integrity for motorized systems. We take the "measurement risk" off your shoulders so you can just enjoy the results.
